How do I know if I am eligible for the NDIS?

To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:

  • Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
  • Be less than 65 years old
  • Be an Australian citizen, or hold a permanent Visa
  • Reside in Australia

The NDIA makes decisions about who can access the NDIS based on eligibility and information provided.

To read more about eligibility visit: https://www.ndis.gov.au/applying-access-ndis/am-i-eligible

Where can I access the Access Request form?

You will be mailed an Access Request form after you are considered eligible to access the NDIS. If you need help filling in the form or making the call you can contact your Local Area Coordinator, GP, specialist, therapist, support worker or even contact your local NDIA office.

What is the difference between Support Coordination and Plan Management?

  • Plan Management is the financial management of your plan. E.g. Paying invoices to providers on your behalf from your plan funding.
  • Support Coordinator will spend time with you and assist in implementing your NDIS plan and to help connect with and find providers, and set up vital services and supports.

How can I tell if my plan has funding for Support Coordination?

Support Coordination funding is a 'stated support' and you would see it listed under the Capacity Building support budget. If you can't see this heading then this funding is not available to access in your plan.

Where can I get help if my plan doesn't have support coordination funding included?

If there is a Local Area Coordinator in your region, they are responsible for connecting you with providers and answering queries. You can find out further information or LAC locations at: ndis.gov.au/contact/locations

What does ‘Core Supports Budget’ mean?

Core Supports help you with everyday activities, your disability related needs and to work towards your goals. This budget is flexible and in most cases, you can use your funding across any of the following support categories:

  • Assistance with daily life/Daily Activities
  • Consumables
  • Assistance with Social & Community Participation
  • Transport

What does ‘Capacity Building Support’ budget mean?

Capacity Building supports help build your independence and skills to help you reach your long term goals. Unlike the core supports budget, your Capacity Building Supports cannot be moved from one category to another. These categories include:

  • Support Coordination
  • Improved life choices
  • Improved Daily Living
  • Increased Social & Community Participation
  • Finding & Keeping a Job
  • Improved Relationships
  • Improved Health and Wellbeing

What does 'Improved Life Choices' in my plan mean?

This is funding allocated to Plan Management so you can access a plan manager to pay for providers and supports on your behalf.

What does ‘Capital supports’ in my plan mean?

Capital supports include higher cost pieces of assistive technology, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, which need to be assessed by a qualified therapist. These include:

  • Home Modifications
  • Assistive Technology

When I get my plan is the money paid into my bank account?

No- the funding is held by the NDIS and is available to pay for therapies or supports that you access by submitting invoices related to those supports. You can view your plan funding from the My Gov Portal.

Can I buy food with my NDIS funding?

No- food is not claimable under the NDIS, however you may be able to claim the cost of meal preparation.
